KiwiSport is a government funding initiative to promote sport for school-aged children.

This year, CLM Community Sport and Second Nature Charitable Trust are helping to introduce kayaking to Year 6 - 10 students.

The overall aim is to increase the number of school-aged children participating in organised sport - specifically kayaking, which has a low participation rate in the Auckland area.

The Auckland Youth Kayak programme aims to introduce students to kayaking, by teaching them forward and backward paddling, as well as how to turn and manoeuvre their kayak in the water through basic instruction and fun games.

You will need to allow two (2) hours for this activity, which include:

  • Checking in
  • Getting changed
  • Briefing
  • One (1) hour on water
  • Returning equipment and getting ready to depart the facility

Teachers that had students participate in the programme in 2019 reported that students enjoyed:

  • Learning new skills and confidence building
  • Learning how to pilot independently (paddling on their own)
  • Physical challenge
  • Being involved in water sports

Spaces in this programme are limited so get in quick!

FAQ's

  • What happens if it rains? The session will still go ahead - the activity is not affected by the rain.
  • Do you have changing rooms & showers on-site? Yes! They are heated showers too!
  • Do the students have to know how to swim? Swimming skills are not required - students will need to be comfortable both in and around water.
  • Is there a minimum number of students required? There is a minimum of 10 students required for this programme. If you have less than this, you can partner with another school to meet the minimum number of participants required.
  • Is transport sponsored? Please note that transport is not included in the sponsorship and must be organised and paid for by the school.
  • Will the students get wet? Definitely! Wero recommends swimming attire, short and a towel.
  • What gear do you provide? Wero supply all safety equipment, including a personal flotation device (PFD), helmet, wetsuit boots, kayak, paddle and sprayskirt.
  • If students are away on the day, can an adult go in their place? Please note that the KiwiSport funding is for year 7-10 students only. Any adults that wish to participate in place of a child who is away, must pay on the day via cash, EFTPOS or credit card and is at the discretion of Wero staff.
  • Do adults need to participate in the programme? Wero does not require teachers or adults to participate in the programme.
  • How many guides/instructors do Wero provide for the session? The number of guides allocated to your session is dependent on how many students you bring. Wero's ratio for this activity is 1:10 - so if 15 students attend on the day, there will be two (2) guides allocated to your session. If the adult supervision ratio set by your school requires more adults, the school will need to provide more adults to meet the ratio required.
